Why Regulation Is Hard

My New Obsession is AI Regulation There’s starting to be A LOT of talk about regulating AI, and rightfully so. This open letter to halt AI development has been signed by 1124 people at the time I opened it, and includes some people you may have heard of like Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Yuval Noah Harari, Andrew Yang, and one of the godfathers of modern AI Yoshua Bengio. We can debate until the cows come home the real motivations behind some of those people choosing to sign, but I completely agree with the sentiment....

What people don't get about case law, and the coming storm of AI regulation/litigation

What the public doesn’t get about case law ‘So I’ve found a few cases you might want to look at…’ I was catching up with a couple of law buddies last night - both very smart guys, both from corporate law. Several days later, and some random thoughts

Went to Chicago, had a GREAT time. Best trip I’ve ever taken. Just me and my wife getting a chance to reconnect on our own. No schedules, no pressures. Amazing. Chicago remains my favourite American city. So much to do, awesome food. Second City mainstage was unbelievable. Saw the Tedeschi Trucks band at the Chicago Theater, really cool. It’s basically a cooler Toronto. More importantly…relaxed for a minute. Haven’t done that in a long time....

Days 87, 86 and 85

Last few days have been a bit of a whirlwind. After creating and validating the proof of concept, it was time to sit down and think about an MVP. Assuming an MVP is a simple version of the product that (a) works, and (b) you’re allowed to charge for, this involves creating my own content database instead of stealing it (obviously). Running with the theme of building things as simply as possible, this in my current opinion means using my professional experience to whip up a Notion database (really, a collection of pages) of useful material, and then using Langchain’s Notion QA recipe to deploy something simple....

88 days to go

Day 88! Struggled yesterday and this morning to get my terrible MVP online. Actually, it’s not even an MVP. It’s really a proof of concept, if barely that. But Y Combinator says if it’s not shit, you waited too long to ship. So F it. Tried sticking it up on Vercel’s python runtime through a basic Flask app, but should’ve realized that the limits and timeouts relating to a serverless function architecture wouldn’t be the easiest way to get it up and running....
